Staying Motivated During Winter

Do you struggle to stay on track when the weather gets cold?

I find that during winter my job as a trainer becomes even more important to help people stay on track and "fight" through the cold months to stay fit and healthy. Each year as we approach the end of August there is always that sudden surge of people who come to the realisation that it's time to dust off the trainers (if they've been sitting in the cupboard for 3 months) and start moving again. Summer is coming and that longing feeling for warmer weather is usually a common driver that helps give a lot of people that kick start to get fit again!

However fitness is about your overall health (it's not just about changing the way we look). We all have it in us to find a routine we can maintain for ourselves individually, and if we do this I honestly believe you will find a new enjoyment for staying fit and find out that you will be more likely to keep moving throughout the cooler months!

The way I train my clients from the very first time I meet them is to help them understand how they can maintain a healthy balance between their fitness and normal life, encouraging them to think about a solution long term. Short term goals are great, however we need to always think about how it is going to benefit us in the long term.

There are so many ways to keep going through winter and in fact through any other period of time that you might be lacking motivation, and here are some of my tips for this:

  • If you find you've become a bit complacent try add in something new! This doesn't mean stop doing what you're already doing, because clearly you enjoy that already especially if you have been doing it for a while. It could be something as simple as adding a 3-5km run into your schedule for the week or joining a bootcamp! It's just about adding variety.

  • It's always easy to reach for the comfort food, and then spiral downwards from there. Avoid this and get yourself onto a proper clean eating schedule! Eating clean will help you feel better about yourself and will motivate you to want to keep the rest of your routine up including exercise!

  • Join a challenge! There are always great challenge's out there that you can fit into your current work and exercise schedule. They are designed to help keep you motivated and on track right when you need it. I have an awesome challenge starting on July 11 that focuses exactly on this which is to keep you motivated! Stay tuned to my social media for details about my next challenge in 2022.

With all this in mind, next time you think about taking a break just ask yourself this question; How much better would it be if I could maintain my schedule/routine all year round and not have to dig deep to find that motivation to get you started all over again?

Remember, there is always support out there from professionals like me to help keep you moving!
