Setting up a home gym on a budget!
If the recent pandemic has taught us anything over the past 18 months, it's that we now know how to be way more resourceful.
When COVID first hit and gyms closed the majority of people didn't have equipment set up at home, and many didn't want to have to spend big money on fitness items that potentially would have only been used for a short time. However, as time went on it became increasingly more popular for people to have a set up at home because we saw that the pandemic wasn't leaving us anything soon. More importantly, people started to see and enjoy the convenience of working out at home. As lockdowns start to become less likely in the future the evidence is showing that at-home workouts and having a suitable set-up is here to stay.
During the course of the past year, I have answered many questions from clients and friends to help them set up their own in-home gyms so I wanted to share some tips that can help you especially if you are on a budget!
Here are my tips:
- Set your budget first! This way you know what you have to spend and can divide it evenly across what you decide to buy.
- Setting up your home gym needs to be versatile so that you can do any sort of workout you require. For example online boot camps, yoga, pilates/core, cardio, & strength training. Take this into consideration when selecting the equipment you want.
- I would suggest getting a variety of equipment rather than buying a whole bunch of dumbbells for example. This could be a combination of 1-2 pairs of dumbbells of different weights, 1-2 kettlebells of different weights, resistance bands, skipping rope. This will allow you to then use your equipment for different types of workouts, and each piece will have use for more than 1 purpose.
- Shop around and shop online. I'd suggest staying away from popular brand-name equipment if you are on a tight budget. This is because you will be paying a lot more just for the name. Places such as rebel sport, K-Mart, and online fitness equipment stores have a big range to choose from, and for your general needs at home, their stock will be more than suitable! I have quite a few pieces of equipment from these places and they are still going strong!
- Lastly, get a few things first and slowly add them to your collection. Get the most important pieces you need first and then if your budget allows you can build up what you have to use over time.
