Working From Home and Posture Awareness

As most of us are now working from home this means we are most likely to spend more time on our couches or sitting up in bed on our laptops.

Whilst this might be "comfortable" your body may not actually be thanking you for it.

If we think about sitting at a computer desk in the office, usually we aren't slouched or sinking into fluffy blankets and pillows. Instead, most of us have got a proper ergonomically set up desk and chair.

Since being at home you may not have the luxury of a home study that has a proper work desk and office chair. So the key is to be aware of your posture and wellbeing. This is so we can avoid lower back pain from sitting in the wrong position all day, and avoid creating postural imbalances.

My 4 top tips to avoid or reduce feeling sore and to help maintain good posture are:

1 - Avoid prolonged periods of sitting down. Try and stand up every hour to stretch and walk around your house.

2 - Stretch, stretch, stretch, and exercise! Lower back stretches that are always helpful include, Supine Back Stretch, Childs Pose, Thoracic Rotations. Also, be sure to maintain your daily exercise routine.

3 - Mix up where you sit during the day. If you typically use the couch for most of your computer time, try and sit at your dining table for part of the day. You are less likely to slump or slouch sitting at a table compared to the couch.

4 - Be aware of your posture. If you catch yourself in the wrong position, quickly fix your position of sitting to avoid staying in the wrong position for a long period of time.
