3 yoga poses that can help with back pain

Back pain can be caused by a number of different factors, and at times it requires advice and support from your allied health professionals.

However often back pain is attributed to many reasons that can be treated by simply stretching the correct way and by incorporating exercises into your weekly routine that can help strengthen the muscles around of your core and around the spine.

Reasons why you may be feeling back pain could include:

  • Poor posture (From sitting incorrectly at your work desk)

  • Lifestyle reasons. Are you on your feet all day, everyday with the wrong footwear, or standing over a bench with the wrong posture?

  • Over compensation in other areas of your body due to muscle weaknesses

  • Muscle imbalances

  • Leading a more sedentary lifestyle

If you’re looking for some great low impact ways to stretch and feel a nice release after being stuck at work or stuck at a desk all day try these great yoga poses!

  1. Cat-Cow. This helps mobilise the spine and is a soothing pose that your body and back will enjoy. Practicing this pose also stretches your torso, shoulders, and neck.

  2. Downward Dog. This is a traditional forward bend pose and can also help you feel de-stressed and relaxed. It helps to work out imbalances in the body and improves strength.

  3. Bridge pose. This is a backbend and strengthening pose. Bridges can help strengthen your glutes and take pressure away from your lower back. It stretches the spine and can also help relieve headaches.
