5 reasons why exercise with a friend is so effective

You’ve heard the saying; “things are better in two’s” right?

Well that line absolutely rings true for a lot of people when it comes to their training. I also know speaking from experience training on your own sometimes can be a little bit of a drag, and the time of your session can feel a lot longer compared to if you were working out with a buddy.

I’ve also seen across my time running bootcamps that people like to come along with a friend or relative because they feel more comfortable doing so and it makes exercise feel so much more enjoyable.

So, let’s go through my 5 top reasons why exercising with a friend is so effective!

  1. Hold each other accountable. This is probably my favourite benefit. When you have committed to doing something with someone you are less likely to drop out and let them down, whether it’s exercise or not. If you plan to exercise on your own and you’re not disciplined enough to do it, having a friend to workout with will encourage you to get it done and not back out. This also goes both ways, you too can hold your friend accountable at the same time!

  2. It’s fun! Working out with a friend is more enjoyable and as I said above, it helps pass the time quicker. You both might also decide to join a bootcamp or group fitness class with like minded people. This will give you the opportunity to connect with your community more and even potentially make new friends too!

  3. You work harder when someone else is around! When you train or exercise with a friend you have the ability to push each other and encourage each other to work harder. This is because you are comfortable with one another and want to see each other succeed.

  4. You’re more likely to achieve your goals. When you train with a friend and your adherence to exercise is higher you are going to see the knock on effects from this. By exercising more and without finding other excuses, you are going to see your fitness and health improve. This is all simply done by holding each other accountable to not back out of a workout.

  5. Less time to think about what you need to do. If you aren’t attending a group session or even a personal training session together, you still have the ability to lean on each other when you train with someone else. You can both take it in turns to decide what type of workout you are going to do, which will also help remove any procrastination you might run into if you were trying to find the motivation to workout on your own!

There are many more reasons why I love training with other people (partly why I started my bootcamps!) and I could go on forever, but I think it’s safe to say working out with like minded people/friends is one of the most effective ways to achieve your exercise goals and to stay fit & active.
